United Women on the Fly (UWOTF), TroutRoutes, and Fly Fish Instruct is excited to offer a Women’s “Independent Angler” Weekend at no cost to the recipient with an optional $200 travel stipend. This scholarship opportunity provides diverse women with education and financial assistance to explore their interest in fly fishing and gain a better understanding of the sport and conservation during an all-inclusive weekend trip in the beautiful state of Virginia. Candidates chosen for this scholarship will learn to fly fish on private water in Virginia. Participants are encouraged to share this opportunity with others.

We want you to leave feeling more confident and competent on the water.  This course is geared towards the beginner to the intermediate angler. You will have access to the online “Fly Fishing 101” and “Reading Trout Water” course to review before the weekend.  Experience is not required. Equipment can be borrowed if needed.

2-Day Women’s “Fly Fishing 201” Workshop

The 2-Day “Fly Fishing 201” Workshop is geared toward the advanced beginner to the intermediate angler. We’ve taken the “Fly Fishing 201” online course and have extended it to 16 hours.  Each day will be 4hrs of in-person classroom and outside casting, lunch and then 4hrs of on-water instruction with the Headwaters Outfitters guides on private water. 

Dates – Thursday 5/11/23 and Friday 5/13/23

Time – 8:00am – 5:00pm

The LIVE “Summer Trout Fishing Techniques” Online Course is geared towards the beginner to the advanced intermediate angler.  Summer trout fishing techniques can vary from early summer to late summer.  Join Heather Hodson as she discusses summer hatches, water types (runoff and summer water), trout behavior, leader examples for fishing the varying depths of the water column during specific stages of aquatic insects, casting tips for each fishing technique and we’ll end with a Q&A session.  This course is recommended for those joining a UWOTF Fish and “Hang” event.

Entomology 101

The LIVE “Entomology 101” Online Course is geared towards the beginner/intermediate angler that is ready to get nerdy. Familiarizing yourself with aquatic entomology and biology is key to becoming an advanced angler and this class does exactly that. 

We’ll start with familiarizing you with the scientific classifications and morphology of aquatic insects. We will then go over the basics of aquatic insect evolution highlighting key traits and discussing the two different life cycles. The second portion of the class will dive into each of the four most common aquatic insect orders for fly fishing; Mayflies, Stoneflies, Caddisflies, and Midges. While exploring the insect orders, we will highlight key characteristics of morphology and behaviors within life stages (i.e. nymph, larva, pupa, adult) that will bring your fly fishing techniques to the next level.
